A SAS team usually known more for its brain than its brawn ranked in the top third at the December 2009 Knowledge Bowl Masters Open Competition, placing 165th out of 628 high schools from across the globe, and scoring 1403 out of a possible 2000 points.

Defeated teams include a Rhode Island team led by ex-SAS teacher and Knowledge Bowl sponsor Bill Rives, who current SAS sponsors, Paul Welsh and Erik Torjesen, had a friendly wager against.

SAS scored second among six international schools. They beat close competitor Shanghai American School but were narrowly defeated by Seoul International School in South Korea. Welsh was surprised by the defeat since the school didn’t compete until this year.

“We could have done better,” said senior Prakhar Mehotra, a three year veteran of the team, “but I’m pretty satisfied overall, [especially] since it’s the first time most of the members have competed.”

Although the team consisted of a wide variety of people, the downfall, according to Mehotra, was communication difficulties. “The person clicking got confused and clicked incorrect buttons.”

The team has high goals for the upcoming competition that will take place in April 2010. Welsh wishes to rank first amongst international schools although competition from Shanghai and Korea is expected to be tough. Welsh also aims to score around 1500 (compared to a perfect score of 2000) in hopes of placing in the top 100 schools.

All Knowledge Bowl contestants take away something memorable. Some take away further knowledge on a subject. Some take away a new friend. And the sponsors Welsh and Torjesen pocket dollars from Bill Rives.
